There are quite a few differences between medicine and public health. Medicine is primarily focused on individual patients, emphasizing on diagnosing and treating diseases (Harvard, 2016). Medicine is also organized by specific specializations. One specialization is the organ systems and how they function. Another is the type of patient groups, whether it was geriatrics, pediatrics, obstetrics, etc. There is also technical skills such as using radiology, dermatology, or surgery. Public health on the other hand primarily focuses on the population with an emphasis on disease prevention and promotion of health within an entire community (Harvard, 2016). They also find ways to prevent the spread of diseases and protect the environment from hazards. The one way that public health has impacted my life is the quarantine orders and restricted travel that have occurred since the outbreak of COVID-19. The second way is the promotion of healthy lifestyles as I am losing my postnatal weight. The final way it has impacted my life is the importance of wearing seatbelts and correctly using car seats for my children to reduce injury or death.

Unit 1 Discussion

Adjust automatic marking as read setting

Good afternoon everyone,

For this weeks discussion topic we are asked to explain the difference between medicine and public health. Think about the ways public health affects us and list at least three ways it impacts our daily life. According to American Public Health Association (2017) “Public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play. While a doctor treats people who are sick, those of us working in public health try to prevent people from getting sick or injured in the first place. We also promote wellness by encouraging healthy behaviors” (p. 1). When a patient is seen by a medical provider they are individually seen for their medical condition. While public health prevent the public from becoming patients and improve their quality of life. The three ways that public health can effect our daily lives are people not adhering to the public health rules during this epidemic. First by wearing a mask to stop the spread of the virus, maintaining social distancing, properly washing hands to prevent infection, and being up to date on all vaccinations. If these recommendations are performed by the public this would not impact our daily life.

Thank you
