Who are some major non-hospital and non-physician sectors of the healthcare industry?
There are 3 major non-hospital and non-physician sectors of the healthcare industry: nursing homes and long term care facilities, medical groups, and health plans. First, the nursing home industry has grown exponentially over the past ten years. This can be attributed to Americans living longer and also to government payment and regulatory policy. Nursing homes fall under the long term care industry, both skilled and intermediate care facilities. These types of facilities offer medical and day-to-day care for the elderly and patients needed rehabilitation after surgeries or other medical traumas. While I worked as a speech pathologist in a skilled nursing facility, I learned very quickly that the therapy department brought a huge chunk of revenue to the facility. Before the PDPM system was set in place, our administrator would push us to get the highest RUG level we could get with our therapy patients, so that the nursing home could get the highest payout from Medicare. Next, medical groups are groups that can contract with health plans. They are usually a group of doctors that work in small practices with a few doctors all the way up to large organizations with many doctors. Medical care is provided by not only doctors, but nurses, therapists, and other professionals. This is in contrast to the final non-hospitals medical sectors, which are health plans. Health plans are, “responsible for seeing that its members get care easily by contracting with enough Medical Groups and their doctors in a local area” (Liveclinic.com, 2016). Because of this, access to medical care in local areas is more convenient.
