At resting state, Na and K channels (the Na/ K pump) maintain the negative cell potential inside the cell. If a stimulus reaches the threshold, it results in the depolarisation (reduction in difference of electrical potential) across the cell membrane. Following this, all Na channels open making the inside of the cell more positive than outside. The action potential occurs now. Na channels inactivate and the resting potential returns. The action potential is a temporary shift from negative to positive inside the cells membrane.
