Gun-Violence in Schools

1. Develop catchy name for product or public awareness campaign. Provide brief rationale for name. Recognize the signs? Call the hotline.
The name of our public awareness campaign is simple and self-explanatory. It is meant to remind people what they should do if they see signs of a             violent personality.
2. Public Awareness Campaign
a. Describe aim and scope supported by research.
Our public awareness campaign would teach students and faculty the early signs they should look out for that could indicate a potential violent schoolmate. I believe there is already a hotline in place to call if an individual has suspicions, but the students are not informed of what may be considered small signs to look for. Most students are told to call if you hear a rumor of a gun coming to school, but more often than not the shooter is not going to come right out and share their plans.
However, there are signs to look out for. The parents of the Sandy Hook victims release a powerful video following the MSD shooting. In every frame of the video it showed the same student, showing different signs that he was heading towards a violent path. Most people watching it missed those signs. All it takes is one person to notice and speak up to save lives. Our campaign could be in the form of a video shown in schools across the country, rallies in school, or both. Here are a few signs of potential shooters:

1. Act Violently and has no Remorse: The lack of remorse is probably one of the most striking signs of a shooter. They do unspeakable acts and display no regret. (Killing animals, harming siblings) (Healy).
2. History of Social, Emotional & Mental disturbances: Socially inept, does not fit in with peers, lacking emotional intelligence, etc. (Healy).
3. Obsession with weapons: Shooters tend to study how to build explosives, learn how to acquire guns, from the high powered assault rifle to glock
handgun, and many have collection of weapons like knives as well as weapon memorabilia(Healy). Individuals may also have social media accounts that regularly feature photos of guns or other weapons.
4. No meaningful friends: Shooters tend to remain by themselves, unless they find a like-minded person like the two shooters in the Columbine shooting that joined forces (Healy).
b. Explain how campaign is beneficial to its target audience. This campaign is beneficial because it can save lives. Reporting a suspicious
student could turn out end up being nothing, but the potential benefit of stopping a school shooting is worth speaking up. Calling the hotline may be just enough to put a student on the school and police’s radar.
