Is Vaping a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes?

first key point for why I’m choosing this position is that according to the pro con website, there was a 900% increase in vaping by middle and high school students between 2011 and 2015 which caused the US Surgeon General to declare it an “epidemic”. The website also states that kids who vape are four times as likely to try regular cigarettes, which is an opposition to being a safer alternative to smoking. Researchers have also determined that the devices used for vaping emit considerable levels of intoxicants, some of which are shared/overlap with tobacco smoking”, meaning that they are just as dangerous or more dangerous than the traditional cigarette.

The second key point that vaping causes serious health risks. According to the Pro Con website, people who use e-cigarettes have a 71 percent increased risk of stroke and 40 percent higher risk of heart disease compared to people who don’t use them. Studies have shown that e-cigarettes can cause arterial stiffness and cardiovascular harm, and may increase the odds of a heart attack by 42 percent. Those are all big health risks that can horribly affect you just from using e-cigarettes. This study shows that vaping isn’t better than cigarettes because the risks of vaping are just as negative as the normal cigarette.

The third key point is that e-cigarettes can catch fire or even explode. According to the Pro Con article, researchers at George Mason University found that 2,035 people needed emergency room treatment for burn or explosion injuries from e-cigarettes between 2015 and 2017, and believe there were more injuries that went untreated. This is true because anything that’s electrical has the capability of explosion. For example, our phones have been known to explode as well as the cars we drive. So for something that is heating liquid into a vapor to catch fire or explode won’t be so surprising.

#2: A lot of people are vaping, or use E-cigarettes. The majority of the people who smoke E-cigarettes or something like that are the young people, high school kids, and other very small ages. That is very harmful for them and can lead them to more harmful paths. I’m taking the con side because vaping, smoking E-cigarettes, juul, or anything like that is still a harmful position for people and even if E-cigarettes might have lower rate of nicotine than the actual cigarettes that still can affect the people. The high school and middle school kids are smoking E-cigarettes and that can lead them to try and smoke actual cigarettes, and that way they might get addicted to the high nicotine that is existed in real cigarettes. “…noting a 900% increase in vaping by middle and high school students between 2011 and 2015… Teens who use e-cigarettes are four times more likely to try regular cigarettes than their peers who never used tobacco, and 21.8% of youth cigarette use may be attributable to initiation through vaping.” (con 1). If people keep smoking cigarettes they will have a high risk of getting dangerous diseases like heart disease, cancer, stroke and other dangerous diseases. “People who use e-cigarettes have a 71 percent increased risk of stroke and 40 percent higher risk of heart disease, as compared to nonusers.” (con 2). Any type of smoking can be addictive even E-cigarettes or Juul because it has nicotine, so smoking E-cigarettes is also a bad idea and it is not better than smoking cigarettes even though it is less riskier than actual cigarettes, but it is still has nicotine that can affect the people who use it. “Most contain the chemical nicotine, which is addictive. When you stop using it, you can go into withdrawal and feel depressed and crabby.” (webmd.com). Smoking E-cigarettes can also be harmful because it might explode that will hurt the body and that person might even lose a part of his/her body like an eye, tooth tongue. Sometimes the explosion becomes strong enough to damage a wall or something like that. “E-cigarette explosions have led to the loss of body parts (such as an eye, tongue, or tooth), third degree burns, holes in the roof of the mouth, and death.” (con 3). And any type or method of smoking whether it is an E-cigarette or an actual cigarettes, it is going to be a harmful idea for that person’s body and health, so it is better to not even start it.

For each discussion activity, you are required to complete two elements:

1) Submit an original post, in your own words citing at least 1 published source- our textbook counts, that answers the question. Write your post as if it were a written assignment that you would turn in. Many people have points deducted because they submit their posts using slang language, e-mail or a text message formats. Note: Do not forget to capitalize the letter “I”. If you need help using proper grammar click onto the external links button and use the Purdue Owl Writing center.

AND

2) Respond to at least 2 other student’s posts. Note: Responding posts can be posted up to 2 days after the deadline for your original post. (((((((((You MUST use citations (at least 1) for each reply posting.))))))))))

Remember the assignment is to get you talking about what you have discovered. Use specific examples both in your answers to the questions and to your response to other students’ postings. Check out the Grading Rubric (View Rubric) before you submit your posts.

The Argument:

To Vape or not to Vape? Is Vaping a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes?

Choose to be Pro or Con

Proponents (pro) believe- Vaping is a safer alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. They do not contain the many known carcinogenic ingredients that cause chronic disease and death. They also allow people a method of smoking cessation that will help them quit the use of nicotine altogether.

Opponents believe (Con)- E-cigarettes are potentially explosive devices that addict teens and young adults to nicotine and most likely cause unknown serious health problems.

Research 3 Key Pro or Con points about the Vaping debate depending on what position you choose. You will only represent either the Pro side or the Con side. NOTE: You can take either side of the issue despite your personal beliefs.

Make sure you indicate whether you are representing the Pro position or Con (example: I am taking the Pro position because……) position then:

List/describe your 3 key points. Make sure you include why you believe these points (you must back up your opinion with at least one reference for each point!).

When you respond to other students’ posts make sure you also back up your thoughts/opinions with referenced material (at least one cited reference for each reply).
