The advanced practice nurse professionals provide efficient and cost-effective healthcare services (Mennella & Heering, 2017). Policies related to professional autonomy and scope of practice in the U.S. continue to cause barriers and challenges to the advanced practice nurse profession (Mennella & Heering, 2017). Organized physician associations, such as the American Medical Association are often primary opponents who challenge the scope of practice and autonomy of APN’s (Mennella & Heering, 2017). Even though APN’s continue to meet and exceed their worth in providing quality health care, there is still a perceived threat to the medical profession, the economic role of physicians, and concerns about the perceived threat to public safety (Mennella & Heering, 2017).

Patient advocate is an essential component of the advanced practice nurse’s role. Nurses have a long history as influential professionals (Schub & Strayer, 2018). For example, Lillian Wald was a nurse advocate for disadvantaged groups and promoted the first school nurse role (Schub & Strayer, 2018). She was a strong advocate for social programs, such as the free lunch program (Schub & Strayer, 2018). Continued advocacy as an APN is essential in making structural changes and improving patient care (Schub & Strayer, 2018).

1.Professionalism- Professionalism is based on self-awareness, being able to reflect on one’s experiences, skills, knowledge, values, attitudes, and constructive criticism from others (DeNisco & Barker, 2015). An advanced practice nurse must be able to reflect upon their personal thoughts and actions to gain an understanding of their leadership skills, values, and knowledge (DeNisco & Barker, 2015). Self-reflection helps an advanced practice nurse to identify their strengths and areas in need of further development as a leader (DeNisco & Barker, 2015).
