Discussion board- Writing Persuasive Messages

we will work on plans and drafts for the course writing projects, the first of which is to write a message to a specific audience, persuading that audience to consider supporting/adopting the Green Dorm Proposal. Here are some questions to get you started thinking about that:

1. If you haven’t yet answered the Stage 1 Preview Question 1, please answer it here. This will help us get organized into teams for the Green Dorm Project. The question is here:

This week we will begin working on the persuasive letters to different Dominican audiences about the Green Dorm Proposal. The first step is to get organized into teams. To facilitate that process, please answer the following three questions, ideally no later than Wednesday.

  • There are 14 students in the class. We can either organize into 7 teams of 2 or 4 teams of 3-4. There are pros and cons to both arrangements, which I’m sure you know from past team/group work. Which arrangement would you prefer?
  • If there are 4 teams, they might focus on students, faculty, administration/staff, and potential donors/funders. If there are 7 teams, they might focus on students, faculty, administration, Board of Trustees, facilities staff, potential personal donors (alums and other who have donated to Dominican in the past), and potential institutional funders (commercial donors, government and foundation grants). Would you change these lists in any way?
  • Ideally, everyone will get to work on the letter of their choosing, but that will depend on how many people choose what, so we may have to use some kind of lottery. But maybe we can work it out to everyone’s satisfaction in a conversation here. What would your first four choices be, in order of preference?

2. Choose one of the components of persuasive messages described in Writing Persuasive Messagesand explain how you might use that strategy to persuade a specific audience about the Green Dorm Proposal. See the list above, and choose the audience that you would be most interested in writing to.

3. In addition to the information included in the Green Dorm Proposal, what other information would you find useful in addressing the audience that you are most interested in writing to?

4. Choose one of the sample persuasive messages here or here; briefly identify the message you have chosen (or provide a link, so that other can check it out); describe the features that you consider effective persuasive tactics; and then discuss how you might use these tactics in our Green Dorm Persuasive messages.
