In book 4, Augustine narrates his account with his friend where they have hidden under religion to spread false illusions. Ideally, Augustine argues that religion allowed them to be seducers and helped them to earn fame. Other than creating popularity, Augustine claims that religion is a tool that enabled him and his friend to build on their names and satisfy their bodily desires. However, this form of hypocrisy has led to contamination of the body, which is supposed to be the temple of the Holy Spirit. Later, at the age of 17 years old, Augustine gets engaged with a lover at Carthage, where he devout himself to her (Augustine, n.p.). While in this intimate relationship, he remembers how different it is from the previous relationship where he and his friend only succumbed to this idea to fulfil their lust
