ASSIGNMENT 3 – Written assignment – Social issues, social work and social policy Identify an
issue of a social concern for you for example, young people experiencing homeless, refugee’s
seeking asylum, living on Newstart Allowance (you can choose another issue, these are just
examples) and write a 1500 word essay addressing each of the following points: What is the
social issue and why is it important to you (think about your own values and social location)?
What is a social work approach to this issue? Choose one of the major political parties and
identify their approach to this issue (How do they address this issue in their social policies or
media statements?). Does the social work approach align with or differ from the political party’s
approach to this issue? Drawing on the previous examples provided to you in this unit. Think
about what resources you will use in this essay and how to logically structure your essay,
ensuring that you both answer the questions and meet the marking criteria. Social Workers are
required to write clearly, concisely and persuasively. Your essay must be referenced using APA
6th Edition referencing style. A minimum of five academic references for example, journal
articles, books and/or reports are required for this essay. Please cite the original source when
referencing lecture material. University requires students to undertake self-directed learning.
