“Hello everyone,

There have been many developments within the electric car market that have been accelerated from political actions. For instance, there has been a clear movement from the United States government to support and create sustainable energy for automobiles. California developed the Clean Air Act in 1990, which introduced stricter regulations than what the federal government was offering in regards to regulating emissions of hazardous air pollutants (Summary of the Clean Air Act, 2019). California acted as the start to a sustainable energy movement that inspired stricter regulations on gasoline engines, which in turn led to manufacturers looking into alternative fuel options.

In addition to the Clean Air Act, there are laws in the United States that lead to customers receiving tax rebates or incentives for purchasing an electric vehicle. These benefits can vary from state to state, but typically result in approximately $2,000 in value and can range from $600-$6,000 (Cattaneo, 2018). These acts are extremely important to the electric vehicle market because they help to ease the entry into the electric vehicle market as a consumer. The government supports an improved environment and therefore will make a currently high-priced electric car cheaper and more affordable. This clear support for electric vehicles is a great sign for any companies that are developing these cars because it shows that there is support for electric vehicles in the future. This support could lead to a future where all cars run on electricity instead of gasoline. This means that leadership of automobile companies should quickly jump on the electric vehicle bandwagon and develop their own models so they can try to place a foothold on this quickly developing market. If a company can successfully do this, they may be ahead of the curve as the automobile market transitions from gasoline to possibly all-electric.

Some other political factors that could affect the electric car market are: incentives and rebates being removed, the fact that the incentives are capped when a specific electric vehicle model reaches 200,000 units sold, new acts could be enacted that do not support electric vehicles which could lead to the market (that is heavily supported now) to collapse, government sustainable energy initiatives could lead to more competition in terms of fuel source (hydrogen-powered, vegetable oil).

“PHIT [Personal Health Investment Today] Act was originally introduced to the US Congress in 2006 and most recently passed through the House of Representatives in 2018. The Act would allow Americans to utilize Health Savings Accounts and flexible Spending Accounts to pay for physical fitness initiatives such as fitness memberships. PHIT is beneficial as “90 million Americans will have access to pre-tax funds for physical activity expenses and will be able to receive a 25–40 percent discount on active lifestyle costs (Sells, 2018, p 27). It should be noted the fitness centers will still receive the full cost benefit. At the moment the only health related expenses these accounts can be used for are doctor’s visits and medications. The proposal for Americans is, “the amount that could be claimed under the PHIT Act cannot exceed $500 ($1000 for married taxpayers and heads of household) for memberships and classes”(Philips Erb, 2018). The proposed tax bill is creating a national impact to promote healthier lifestyles and physical activity ultimately reducing health care costs.

The proposed tax bill has not passed due to the political divide behind it. The Affordable Care Act, “implementation of the ACA [Affordable Care Act] led to the contentious battle to repeal “Obamacare,” which provided no opportunity for a bipartisan effort to improve the system. The “repeal & replace” effort ultimately failed” (Sells, 2018, p 27). Congress is actively working on improving the healthcare model rather than replacing the existing model and also introduced the Bipartisan HSA Improvement Act of 2018 which amends the IRS Code for Health Savings accounts making them more beneficial for consumers. Additional backlash on the proposed bill is that it may be in fact more beneficial for the wealthy rather than regular tax payers. Well known global companies are in support of PHIT, “Adidas, Brooks, Reebok and Under Armour, as well as sports clubs like Planet Fitness. The company actively touted the 2017 bill on their website with advocacy tips, a social media hashtag” (Philips Erb, 2018). While the bill is being recognized and promoted it still has a long uphill battle before it becomes a law.
