Conducting a Successful Digital Forensic Investigation

Conducting a Successful Digital Forensic Investigation

Instructions

It is essential that digital forensic investigators take the time to thoroughly document investigation processes. Although there are many techniques for collecting data, there are numerous precautions that need to be taken into account to prevent data corruption, especially when the particular investigation is related to illegal financial transactions. Many cases have been dismissed in court simply because untrained digital forensic investigators took matters into their own hands, only to discover that they inadvertently tempered with the most crucial components of the data. This issue can be related to a break in the chain of custody of evidence, which can create an undefeatable obstacle for legal authorities to contend with.

The steps that must be completed to take a possible case to trial involve a detailed plan of action:

  • Noticing unusual activity,
  • Initial gathering of evidence,
  • Confirmation of suspicious activities,
  • Discovery of criminal acts,
  • Collecting e-evidence,
  • Deciding to contact police at a managerial level,
  • Initiating a criminal investigation,
  • The seizure of evidence,
  • E-evidence identification, preservation, and analysis,
  • The preparation of reports, and
  • Prosecution through the process of a trial.

Write a paper to accomplish the following:

  • Apply the knowledge gained in this section to appraise fraud and forensic accounting investigation processes.
  • Develop a plan that must be carefully implemented in order to take a fraud case to court.
  • For this assignment, you may assume a particular fictional situation or company and assess the steps necessary to conduct a digital forensic investigation.
