The behaviours of individuals with borderline personality disorder

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is described as a serious psychiatric disorder which displays patterns of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image and impulse control which begins in early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts (Westwood & Baker 2010). Gallup and Tully (2009) and Westwood and Baker (2010) Faith Takavarasha Module 9

both addresses self-harm as one of the challenging behaviours presented by people with borderline personality disorders. According to Gallup and Tully (2009) individuals who self-harm has a history of childhood trauma, this can be neglect, emotional, physical or sexual abuse. Self-harm is often an attempt to express distress and feelings of guilt, shame, relieve pain and to communicate needs. Westwood and Bakers (2010) describes self-destructive behaviour, self-mutilation and intense anger shown by clients with borderline personality disorder as affecting the interpersonal relationships with nursing staff.

According to Westwood and Baker (2010) literature shows that mental health nurses have negative attitudes towards clients with BPD which may influence the quality of care they receive. Mental health nurses perceive the behaviours as dangerous, manipulative and attention seeking. Nursing role according to Gallup and Tully (2009) should start by establishing a therapeutic relationship with the client and obtaining information about how the self-harm behaviours has been helping the client and not being judgemental during the process. Being able to set goals and work together with the client is also essential. Mental health nurses should have the enough knowledge of the nature of BPD and its symptoms and according to Westwood and Baker (2010) there is need for more training and supervision in mental health settings. This is hoped to improve the relationships between clients and mental health nurses and increase sympathy and skills in managing the client.
