Read the introduction to Guillen, Collins, England and Meyer’s book, New Economic Sociology, The: Developments in an Emerging Field and watch the video below.
Answer the following questions:
1. Guillen et. al. mention four directions of new economic sociology: culture, networks and social capital, trust, and effort and motivation. How do these ideas map onto the concepts of culture, social networks and relations, and institutions? How do they differ?
2. Both in the video and the chapter, there are several examples of the types of cases studied by economic sociologists. These range from corporations and production markets to households and intimate relations. What cases would you be interested in knowing more about? What do you think a sociological perspective would bring to the analysis of that case?
