Analysis on Missing Indigenous Women

DIRECTIONS:

To continue with the theme of trauma and barriers in education, I would like us to read Terese Marie Mailhot. These short essays are from her best-selling memoir Heart Berries. Mailhot is First Nations (Indigenous) and from the Seabird Island Band in British Columbia.

The two essays you will be reading bookend Mailhot’s memoir and are entitled the same: “Indian Condition”. I have labeled them with their chapter titles to keep them separate.

Please read the essays carefully. If it helps, and you have the ability, feel free to print and annotate it. If not, I suggest taking notes as you read. If you are struggling to annotate the text, remember you can review English 020 Connection: Reading Strategies.

Step 1:

Read the following excerpts from Terese Marie Mailhot’s memoir Heart Berries.

STEP 2:

In conjunction with the two readings, please watch the follow video on Missing Indigenous Women by AJ+ and answer the following questions. These questions can either be uploaded as a separate document, text submission or typed at the end of your annotation worksheet.

Questions for AJ+

  1. What was your takeaway or what surprised you the most about the video?
  2. Knowing what you know now from the video, what new understanding do you have about the two essays you read?
